The Power of Sunshine
This year Punxsutawney Phil the groundhog decided there would be six more weeks of winter. For some (me included) this is not what we wanted to hear. Winter brings decreased daylight hours, colder temperatures, changes in social routines, and not to mention the extra stress the holiday season can bring. Winter months can have a significant impact on mental health, and it’s been a long winter. Lucky for us, there is a simple and free tool we can utilize to take the edge off…SUNSHINE! There are many benefits the sun brings and below are just a few:
Increase Serotonin Levels: Sunlight increases the production of serotonin which is linked to feelings of happiness and well-being
Reduce Stress: Sunlight helps regulate stress hormones like cortisol, which can make it easier to relax
Improve Sleep: Sunlight helps regulate melatonin, the sleep hormone, which can help you fall asleep more easily
Vitamin D: Sunlight triggers the production of vitamin D which is important for a healthy immune system and strong bones
Exposure to sunlight has positive effects on mental health. It can reduce symptoms of various mental health disorders, including depression and anxiety. Just 8 to 10 minutes of sun exposure can get you enough Vitamin D.. So next time you are feeling down, stressed, or just need a refresher - step outside, breathe, and let that sunshine do it’s magic.
What does a groundhog know anyway?
